Newsgroups
A newsgroup is a discussion group usually related to a specific topic such as music, movies and hobbies. You can look at it as a repository for messages posted from many Internet users in different locations. Most newsgroups are connected via Usenet, a worldwide network that uses the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP). Newsgroups sometimes function as a bulletin-board where people can share information, files, photos and any other kind of information, usually anonymous, just by posting a message to the newsgroup site.
Risks:
- Not all newsgroup content is appropriate for children. Some newsgroups promote hate and racism, in some the language can be harsh. It is important to make sure that the newsgroups your child participates in are suitable for his/her age.
- Many newsgroups post pornographic material. There are also specific newsgroups dedicated to porn. These newsgroups have advertisements for pornographic websites that children might be tempted to surf.
