Adware (=advertising-supported software) is any computer software that once executed is used to present advertisements. Common adware programs are toolbars that sit on your desktop or work in conjunction with your web browser. They are free to use, but require you to view advertisements for as long as the programs are open. Adware is usually seen by its creator as a way to cover development expenses and in some cases it allows the software to be provided to the user free of charge or at a reduced price.

Most adware is safe to use but some may be dishonest. Dishonest adware exploits the legitimate use of the adware as an advertising tool for malicious intentions.
